The Challenges of Raising Teenagers
Parenting can be difficult, especially when it comes to teenagers. This is a challenging age when kids can be greatly influenced by others, and many times that influence can be negative.
When it comes to parenting a toddler, parents are focused on helping their kids assert their unique personality and independence. Before they realize it, parents will have entered the world of raising teenagers.
When it comes to parenting teens, especially those who are in high school, the parents’ words will be challenged, and their once dependent toddler is replaced with an unpredictable young person who feels they are already capable of all decision-making on their own.
We are living in a very fast-phased era: the age of social media, smart phones, and multi-tasking. Our kids are also caught up in this lifestyle. Everything must be quick with instant gratification or immediate rewards. However, in real life, learning and experience need a certain amount of time to grow.
In contrast, our kids are being expected to go from one task to another, seldom accomplishing anything, resulting in an identity crisis and depression.
Teens must be properly trained to become good members of our society. They need to understand that one must run his or her own race and that having any recognition or social standing is meaningless if one does not contribute to the betterment of society.
Martial Arts school instructors emphasize the following:
- discipline,
- respect,
- honor,
- humility,
- grace,
- hard work, and
- integrity.
These are traits that must be instilled in kids to mold them into good members of society.

What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ, is a ground fighting martial art that focuses on the skill of dominating one’s opponent through the grappling art and techniques that cause him or her to submit.
Bjj (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu)takes pleasure in being regarded as the “gentle art,” enabling a smaller and weaker person to defend himself against a larger opponent by using leverage and submissions (chokes and locks).
Having its roots in Judo (Newaza) and Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was adapted and modified by Carlos Gracie and his family to form the martial art it is today. In 1986, his son, Carlos Gracie Jr., established the first Gracie Barra School in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. From that one location, he built the world’s largest Jiu Jitsu organization, with offices in North America, Brazil, Australia, Japan, and Europe, and over 700 schools worldwide, which includes Evolve MMA, the largest BJJ gym in Singapore and home to the first and only Renzo Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym in Asia.
The popularity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) has steadily increased over the years, mainly caused by the rising popularity of mixed martial arts (MMA). Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu terms like “rear naked choke,” “armbar,” and “guard” have even become common language among non-practitioners.
How Can Kids Jiu Jitsu Benefit My Teen-Aged Child?
The majority of kids Martial Arts schools depend on striking the attacker with punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. Our kids BJJ training is unique in that all of the skills are entirely defensive and do not include any strikes. We educate the kids on how to protect themselves if they are assaulted, as well as how to defuse the danger and regain control. Our kid’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Program will develop problem solving skills in your child and prepare them to face many problems and obstacles in everyday life, such as dealing with a bully. It will also instill in your child the character traits that will lead to success in many aspects of life.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu employs concepts such as reaction, leverage, and base. Kids learn to utilize an opponent’s strength to their advantage rather than struggling against it. A student will experience these ideas and learn how to use them as a technique in a jiu jitsu class in our martial arts school.
Children have a greater sense of body awareness and coordination, which leads to increased confidence and inner discipline. Kids not only learn self defense effectively, but they also improve their kinaesthetic abilities, allowing them to thrive in any other sport in which they participate.
The bulk of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class time is spent working with partners and practicing moves. This constant close contact enables practitioners to instill the natural phenomenon of body action and reaction to leverage and balance in an interactive manner, rather than individual repetitive moves in theoretical situations. Kids learn to read and anticipate their opponents’ moves, and then respond accordingly. They are continuously exposed to the dynamic, and it gets hard wired into their body’s memory.
Learning jiu jitsu has both physical and mental benefits for kids. Some of these benefits are common to studying martial arts, while other benefits are unique to jiu jitsu training.
Mental Health
The mental health of today’s youth is in jeopardy. Bullying, anxiety, depression, and suicide are becoming more common. According to reports, 160,000 kids leave school EVERY DAY because they are afraid of being bullied. 85% of bullied kids get no intervention and must cope with the bullying on their own.
Martial arts have long been renowned for their ability to develop character and discipline. Brazilian jiu-jitsu, on the other hand, offers an added benefit: mental toughness. Bjj is a physical chess game in which you are always planning your next move in response to your opponent. Physical contact with other people, a sense of belongingness, goal setting and accomplishment, and confidence gained from learning and performing new skills all contribute to the development of mental toughness.
Discipline
Kids attend bjj martial arts classes on a regular basis to learn techniques and to prepare for higher skill level and competition, earning stripes toward black belt.
Physical Fitness
For a young child who isn’t interested in traditional sports like basketball or baseball, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu martial arts class might be a great physical activity. Your teen will not be cut from a team, and bjj does not need any previous experience or skill level. Students often progress at their own pace and can enjoy the benefits of an Individual sport while still enjoying the camaraderie of a group setting.
What is the difference between Mixed Martial Art (MMA) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a legally sanctioned sporting event in which competitors of about similar skill level, strength, size, and experience fight to beat each other up in a controlled environment to see who is the better fighter. Participants must be prepared to fight using all the techniques they have learned (striking, standing grappling with strikes, and ground grappling with strikes). When taken seriously (which many amateurs do not and all professionals must), it is an outrageously difficult task. Being an MMA fighter is one of the most challenging full-time careers available, with very high stakes on all levels. Nothing has done more to filter out successful unarmed conflict techniques and methods than MMA.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, on the other hand, is a martial art focused on self-defense. Modern mixed martial arts owes a great deal to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Gracie family. The Gracies used Vale Tudo (old school MMA) as a forum to illustrate the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in an age when students typically trained in one martial art. The Gracies were so convinced in their art that they founded the UFC to showcase them. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was constantly shown to be the most effective martial art at the time. Since then, all MMA fighters have trained in some kind of ground fighting, the great majority of which is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Unfortunately, many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners consider Jiu Jitsu to be inferior to MMA. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is essential to the success of MMA, such that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can survive in the absence of MMA. MMA is a sport, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a way of life. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lifestyle emphasizes living a healthy, balanced existence and avoiding conflicts. MMA fighters practice for the certainty of a fight against someone who is training just as hard with the purpose of defeating them, so that their career may grow.
